The Second Annual AbEx Redux Exhibition
FA 321 Intermediate Painting
Reception January 31, 4:30pm
Washington State University, Locker Gallery | On view January 31, 2019 through February 22, 2019
This is an exhibition of works created in Intermediate Painting FA 321. Students were asked to create a painting in the style of a well known modern or contemporary abstract painter. The painters the students drew from created wholly or mostly nonrepresentational (non-objective) works—works that do not have clearly recognizable subjects such as cats, people or walnuts. Rather, the subject of an abstract painting is largely the act of painting itself: and the formal principles of design, color, mark-making and the relative thinness or thickness of a painting. The resulting paintings are not necessarily copies but are “master borrows”—borrowing the color palette and approach. Naturally the unique sensibilities of each student shine through as well, creating paintings that speak both to a shared art historical language as well as individual human idiosyncrasies, creating a contemporary dialogue about style and tradition.
