Artist Residency – Open Call

Call To Artists, Scholars and Curators

Artist Residency
Washington State University
Forst Endowed Fine Arts Visiting Artist Program
Pullman, WA

Washington State University Department of Fine Arts seeks a working artist or art scholar to visit to Pullman, WA for a period of four to six weeks during the 2020-2021 academic year. The selected candidate will be adept in examining issues of diversity, gender and contemporary practices in the visual arts. The department seeks proposals for solo exhibitions, curatorial projects, and scholars that may benefit from working in a vibrant academic environment. Artists are provided an honorarium, travel expenses, housing, studio space and 24/7 access to Department of Fine Arts facilities.

Location

Washington State University is located in the town of Pullman, WA, in southeastern Washington state. It is surrounded by the farmland, rivers, semidesert and woodland, set on the rolling hills of the Palouse region of the Pacific Northwest.

Facilities

The Washington State University Department of Fine Arts maintains studios that foster traditional approaches to ceramics, sculpture, painting, and photography as well as new media and intermedia digital media fabrication tools including 3D printers, ceramic printer, laser cutter, and CNC router. The artist/scholar will be provided with a private studio as well as access to departmental studio spaces.

Expectations

Artist/scholar residents should expect to be independently driven. Preferred candidates will have had previous teaching experience and/or have facilitated community projects. Residents must work with area coordinators to use equipment in facilities and studios, within facility guidelines and faculty workload. The residency period will culminate with either a solo exhibition or a curated exhibition (for scholars or curators) in the Department of Fine Arts Gallery 2. The exhibition may be developed in collaboration with graduate and undergraduate students. In addition to the exhibition, the selected candidate will present one public lecture, participate in seminars and one-on-one critiques, have the opportunity to be interviewed for a departmental podcast, and share informal meals with MFA and BFA students. Visiting artists/scholars will be expected to spend between 6 and 10 hours a week on these additional responsibilities.

Honorarium

In addition to covering full lodging expenses, WSU Fine Arts will accommodate the artist/scholar’s travel expenses (mileage) to and from the university at the beginning and end of the residency period, as well as some materials. WSU Fine Arts will also cover shipping expenses up to $300 for shipping work made during residency. A $1700 cash stipend is offered to cover any of the resident’s additional expenses, including meals. One stipend is allocated per residency period for individual artists, or artist groups. Funding for group, or collaborative projects can be increased as necessary following secondary review and negotiation.
