Jovan C. Speller Artist Talk & Exhibition

The Fine Arts Department presents an artist lecture and exhibition of work by Jovan C. Speller, supported by the Forst Endowed Visiting Artist Program. Speller is a multidisciplinary artist based in Minnesota. Her work uses photography, installation, sound, text, and mixed media visual works to interpret historic narratives through contemporary discourse. Her research-based practice is centered around elevating, complicating and inventing stories that explore ancestry, identity, and spatial memory.

Cannupa Hanska Luger Virtual Artist Talk

Cannupa Hanska Luger is a New Mexico based multidisciplinary artist who uses social collaboration in response to timely and site-specific issues. Raised on the Standing Rock Reservation in North Dakota, he is an enrolled member of the Three Affiliated Tribes of Fort Berthold and is of Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara, Lakota and European descent.

Luger produces multi-pronged projects that take many forms—through monumental installations that incorporate ceramics, video, sound, fiber, steel, new media, technology and repurposed materials, Luger interweaves performance and political action to communicate stories about 21st Century Indigeneity. The Fine Arts Department presents an exhibition of work by Jacob Riddle, Assistant Professor, Career Track, in Digital Technology and Culture.

Jacob Riddle is an interdisciplinary artist, educator, and curator. Jacob’s work deals with ideas surrounding labor, class, automation, value, capital, physicality, virtuality, and the natural world. Alonsa Guevara Virtual Artist Talk

Alonsa Guevara is a New York-based artist born in Rancagua, Chile. Her paintings blur the lines between fantasy and reality while celebrating the connection between humankind and nature. A big part of her inspiration derives from her childhood spent living in the Ecuadorian rainforest with her family, growing up surrounded by tropical landscapes and a diverse wildlife. Alonsa’s work has been published in Forbes Magazine, Time Out NYC Magazine, VICE and more.

Edie Overturf Artist Talk

Edie Overturf lives in Portland, Oregon, and teaches printmaking and drawing at Mount Hood Community College. Edie has a home studio and prints letterpress at Independent Publisher’s Resource Center.  She is a member of Blackfish Gallery in the Pearl District of Portland, and her book work is represented by Passages Bookshop in Portland. Edie is a recipient of numerous awards and grants, including a Jerome Emerging Artist Fellowship, and two Minnesota State Arts Board grants. She has attended several residencies, including those at Kala Art Institute, InCahoots, Minnesota Center for Book Arts, and an upcoming Professional Development residency at the Center for Contemporary Printmaking.

Kori Newkirk Artist Talk

Kori Newkirk creates mixed media artworks often inspired from cast-off objects found in his local environs of downtown Los Angeles. By using unpredictable materials such as pony beads, pomade and hair extensions, Newkirk astounds us by articulating complex ideas about our cultural memory. Newkirk’s provocative works, inflected and informed by his African-American heritage, poignantly remind us of our racist inhumanity. Newkirk continually reinvents his practice, rethinking cultural notions of beauty, exploring issues of narcissism, celebrity and spectacle in the political arena, and taking his practice into new unexpected directions.

Short Film Screening – My Neighbor, Miguel

WSU alum Danny Navarro directed a short documentary about an exuberant 72 year-old Columbian artist named Miguel. Miguel recalls his time in San Francisco during the AIDS epidemic and reflects on art, community, and life after such an isolating, traumatic time that affected the entire world. Danny will give a Q & A following the screening.

At some point between his 70th and 75th year, the Spanish artist Francisco Goya y Lucientes (1746-1828) etched images published thirty-six years after his death as Los Proverbios.  Following that 1864 publication, impressions of the plates with titles in Goya’s hand that described the scenes as disparates, perhaps best translated as “irrationalities” came to light, justifying the title by which we today know these etchings.
