The visiting artist lectures and events are funded by the Florence and Edward Forst Endowed Visiting Artist Fund. All lectures and events are free and open to the public.

VISITING ARTIST LECTURES

Linda Sormin
Wednesday, January 16th at 5:00pm in the Fine Arts Auditorium.

Linda Sormin's ceramic installations of use a wide variety of materials and techniques accumulating in unruly improvised structures. Constructed on wooden armatures her projects use hand formed elements alongside broken pots, kitsch ceramics and found elements that manifest a coexistence of languages, cultures and experiences, that disrupt preconceptions of ceramics. Born in Bangkok, Thailand and growing up in Orillia, Ontario, Sormin's work
has been exhibited nationally and internationally. Venues include Stride Gallery in Calgary, AB, Flow Gallery in London, UK, York Quay Gallery in Toronto, and YingKo Ceramics Museum in Taipei, Taiwan. In the fall of 2006, she joined the faculty of Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, RI as Assistant Professor of Ceramics.

Eileen MacDonald
Thursday, February 28th at 5:30 pm in the Fine Arts Auditorium.

The artwork of Eileen MacDonald investigates beauty within the printed mark, using both traditional and unconventional printmaking processes. She explores the physicality of obsessive mark making, and its evidence of human imperfection and unpredictability. MacDonald is currently an Assistant Professor of Printmaking and Drawing at California State University, Chico. She received her BA at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee University, Scotland, and her MFA at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.

The exhibition and Visiting Artist Program for the department is extensive and reflective of a commitment to issues of diversity, gender and contemporary practices in the visual arts. Exhibiting artists, many of international stature, represent different cultures and artistic points of view. They provide personal critiques to the graduate students, give public lectures, and conduct seminars discussing career activities and their work.

Visitors have included: Janine Antoni, Claudia Bernardi, Sidney Chafetz, Enrique Chagoya, Elizabeth Dove, Juan Granados, Andrei Kamalov, Suzanne Lacey, Rick Lowe, Judy Moonelis, Anne Perrigo, Tim Rollins, Ji Rouxiao, Miriam Schapiro, Carol Silverstein, Buster Simpson, Julio Sims, Kiki Smith, Mierle Ukeles, and Bill Viola.
